- Cerralbo Museum
Among the most important museums in Madrid and one of its least-known treasures is the Cerralbo Museum, housed in the palace-house that once belonged to the Marquis of Cerralbo. Its rooms still showcase his private collection of works of art and objects of everyday life, a sumptuous ode to an aristocratic lifestyle at the end of the 19th century.
The collections include paintings by different European artists from the 16th to the 20th centuries, sculptures, drawings, prints, coins, arms and weapons, clocks, ceramics, furniture and more. The highlight is the Sala de Columnitas, where the Marquis of Cerralbo would gather his gentlemen to discuss politics and business.
Stroll around the opulent rooms, marvel at Renaissance paintings and imagine yourself dancing in the dazzling ballroom, and you’ll be taken back to the age of aristocracy in a time-traveling dreamscape. It’s a unique experience you can only find in the heart of Spain’s capital city.
- Prado Museum
Founded in 1819, the Prado Museum (Spanish: Museo Nacional de Pintura y Escultura) houses a remarkable collection of masterpieces. It’s credited with helping us rediscover the Spanish Primitives, positioning El Greco as one of Spain’s greatest artists and establishing Velazquez as the master of the pictorial parnassus.
The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, Nobleman with his Hand on His Chest by El Greco and The Adoration of the Magi by Rubens are just some of its renowned works.
Get to know the raw passion of flamenco song and dance on this Madrid excursion to a popular tablao. Sample traditional Spanish dishes from a local deli before attending a show featuring talented flamenco musicians.
- El Museo del Triunfo
The museum reveals the economic and cultural history of this former silver mining town that was home to people from all over the country. You’ll see the brick ruins of buildings, old mining equipment and two huge smokestacks.
The exhibits also talk about the natural biodiversity of the region and laud the distinct ecotourism opportunities that could become the long-term economic path forward for the town. Just as jobs based on research and conservation have done in the Galapagos, these can bring new money to the area while preserving its unique natural beauty.
The museum is free to visit. It’s worth a stop to admire the art pieces and learn about the history of this little mining town. Then stroll around the grounds and admire the magnificent mountain scenery.
- La Tabacalera
Located in the Lavapies district this self managed social centre has become one of the epicentres of cultural life, urban art and citizen participation in Madrid. The site consists of scores of artists studios, classrooms, random halls, large fabrication workshops, yards with a variety of potaging and a theatre.
It houses a cultural association called CSA La Tabacalera which runs a permanent programme of temporary exhibitions and activities around photography, contemporary art and visual arts. It also organises conferences, workshops and concerts.
The goal of the organisation is to demonstrate that it is people, not money that drives culture. Hence, the centre opposes sponsorships and believes they compromise creative freedom and collaboration. It also seeks to provide alternatives to the process of gentrification in urban spaces.
